Understanding Card Values and Getting Started

Twos through nines are valued at the numbers on their faces, so a three is worth three points and so on. Aces can be worth either one point or 11 points depending upon the player's preference. Finally, 10s and face cards like the Jack, Queen and King are all worth 10 points. The name of the game, Blackjack, occurs when a player receives an Ace and a 10-valued card from the dealer right off. This also has the highest payout in a traditional game at 3:2. Other Rules

Some other rules that players need to keep in mind when it comes to this game include splitting, doubling down and insurance bets. Splitting occurs when the player 'splits' his or her initial two-card hand into two hands. Doubling down is when the player doubles his or her bet in exchange for one card and only one card from the dealer. Insurance bets occur when the dealer is showing an Ace turned up. The player wagers half of his or her original bet and only wins if the dealer has a two-card 21, helping the player to break even in such a case. House rules will often dictate whether or not the dealer must hit on soft 16 (16 created with an Ace and a five) or stand on soft 17, as well.
